John was always a childhood sweetheart. We went thru 12 years of school together as well as Sunday School for years. His mother and my mother worked together at the Ashkum Hatchery for many years while we were in grade school. I remember a time when the owners were having a party on a Saturday evening one summer. John, Dennis and I got bored and walked uptown to Mrs. Collette's and got a root beer. On the way back to the party we were goofing off. At the time, Ashkum was putting in natural gas (1964 or 65) and there were trenches all over. One of the boys fell into the trench. We had a good time telling the adults what had happened and it was because we got "drunk" off of the root "beer" we had been drinking! To me those were some of the best times.
